The US National Arena Soccer Team and Mexican National Futbol Rapido Team jointly announced their rosters for Saturday’s exhibition game at Stockton Arena in Stockton, California. The game will serve as the final tune-up before both teams take off for the WMF World Cup October 1-11 in Perth, Australia.
Jermaine Jones will lend his FIFA World Cup experience to the USNAST for the second time. He will team up with three-time MASL MVP Franck Tayou to try to break the US out of a mini-slump after the team was held to a combined five goals over the last two games.
The US team will also feature local flavor including Captain America Brian Farber, who won the Professional Arena Soccer League MVP award the year he led the Stockton Cougars to a North American Championship in 2009. He will be joined by fellow former Cougars Jesus Molina, the Playoff MVP in 2009, Nelson Santana and Uriel Robledo. AAS567 General Manager Bernie Lilavois was the leading scorer and Head Coach of that championship Cougars team and Enrique Tovar, who played five years for the Cougars, will serve as an assistant coach to Phil Salvagio.
“Playing in Stockton again is going to bring back a lot of good memories for a lot of these players and a lot of fans,” said Lilavois. “Plus anytime you play Mexico on an international stage, it’s going to be an electric atmosphere, and having Jermaine Jones on the field makes it a historic night.”
Mexico will be buoyed by the return of Erick Tovar who missed the entire 2018-19 MASL season with a torn ACL. Christian Gutierrez, Carlos Gonzalez and Daniel Villela will combine with Tovar to provide an explosive quartet.
Raul Sarabia, who has had a strong summer, will again mind the nets for Mexico with defensive support from Cesar Cerda and Manuel Rojo.
Open tryouts for the Stockton Rush will be tomorrow from 1:00-3:00pm at Stockton Arena and one player will be selected to play in the game which kicks off at 6:00pm PDT.
On Monday at 11:00am EDT, AAS567 will announce the US6 National Team WMF World Cup roster.
